Odds and ends

  • According to the CIA, Fidel Castro is the “undisputed ‘maximum leader’ of the Cuban revolution and the dominant figure in Cuban politics, despite rumors to the contrary.” That’s what the CIA wrote in 1966 in a now-declassified study (pdf, 19 pages) posted at Secrecy News, a Federation of American Scientists blog. Thanks to my friend in London for pointing this out.

  • Arriving in Spain, Secretary of State Rice is asked about Spain’s relationship with Cuba and responds that “democratic states have an obligation to act democratically.” The prime minister’s office says her meeting will be a “courtesy call.”
