Odds and ends

  • The EU will not change its policy toward Cuba, EFE reports from Brussels. The result is that the 2003 diplomatic sanctions will remain on the books, but will remain suspended as they have been since 2005. Foreign ministers will meet Monday to make the final decision.

The EU slightly changed its policy by welcoming Cuban representatives to come to Brussels to discuss relevant issues. Any high-level talks were barred by the previous policy. Apparently Belgian soil is ok to talk on, but not Cuban. Absurd. In the end, the constant harranging by Bush Adminstration officials (Rice, Negroponte, McCarry, Shannon all made visits recently) did its job - keeping the EU (principly Britain) in line.

On the defections, not to be too hard nosed, but the official US policy of bienvenidos is what is primarily responsible for such sad acts. It is a shameful US policy that keeps Iraqi refugees and those fearing death (because of our war) out if the US, but welcomes the pampered elites of Cuba as US citizens in order to spite Castro.

Hey, Fidel, we all realize you have a lot of time on your hands these days but good grief give it a rest. Let someone else comment for a change...
