“In the history of society I don't remember any situation where economic accumulation has advanced because some charismatic leader says, ‘You have to produce more.’”
– Cuban magazine editor Aurelio Alonso, quoted in Nick Miroff’s report for NPR on the most recent economic policy debates convened by the government at the workplace and neighborhood level.
That is quite a critical statement coming from what every good journalist in the US would dismissively call a "mouthpiece of the Cuban Government."
ReplyDeleteAlonso is a very interesting figure. He cut his cloth in the 60s with the controvertial publication Pensamiento Crítico. Here' a pretty insightful interview with him from last year, to give some context to his remarks on the economy.
