Wikileaks: U.S.-Cuba drug enforcement ties

An August 2009 cable from the U.S. Interests Section published by the Guardian gives a glimpse into U.S.-Cuba contacts regarding drug enforcement. The U.S. Coast Guard officer at USINT has regular contact with Cuban counterparts. The use of Cuban airspace and territorial waters by northbound smugglers is an ongoing problem for Cuba, and the United States continues to pass information to Cuba to help confront it. In May 2009, a seizure occurred with U.S. help. In August 2009, the Coast Guard officer was invited to Camaguey to see the seized vessel and to see a smuggler’s plane that had just made an emergency landing in Cuba. Lack of Jamaican cooperation in anti-drug efforts is a constant Cuban concern, the cable reports.
