End of an era

Fidel Castro no longer holds public office, but it will still be called the Castro regime, what with his brother in charge and affirming, in his speech that closed the Party Congress, that “Fidel is Fidel and does not need to hold political office to always have a top place in the history, present and future of the Cuban nation..”

The photo above is from Juventud Rebelde, an April 18 message to “compaƱero” Fidel Castro, “delegate” to the Congress, captioned as follows: “Record of a message sent by Raul and received by Fidel.”

Meanwhile, a TIME blogger dug up the magazine’s coverage from January 26, 1959 when the “vengeful visionary” came to power.
