  1. And with what monetary means will they able themselves to afford such lavishes, such wonderful experiences? And Fidel, the King and proprietor and premier capitalist of Cuba, patrionizes the world again. This blog is really quite the joke.

  2. This should also be titled "Figure This One Out, Part II". The video does not show a people under siege but rather a normal holiday scene. Where are the effects of the embargo or the travel restrictions? If this video represents Cuba, let's ignore each other as we pursue different visions of human society! But if this video does not represent daily life for Cubans in Cuba, then a reasonable person may ask what is this video trying to sell? Hot Cubanitas waiting for the "yanqui" tourists? Figure this one out indeed!

when was the last time you were in cuba? how do you think a people under siege should react?
are you still implying there is no affect of the embargo or travel restrictions?
not sure how any one clip could represent daily life of 11 million people. the american policies and restrictions against Cuba are cumulative politically and economically, not to be seen through a snapshot of tourists

I see your point, but you forget to ask yourself about your own home - the wealthiest country in history.

I ask: can average americans can afford nice resorts? I guess they may be afford to go to swampy dirty Alambama beaches, but not the real cool ones.

more than 85 percento of americans don't even have passports for crist sake - primarily b/c they perceive international travel as TOO expensive.

    its all relative

its just the narrative of the media, --why are all right wingers such consiprarcy theorists now....

the same narrative occurs when they talk about tourism say in New Orleans - do they show the conditions or talk about the lives of the 40 percent of folk who live in near or real poverty/

does the media highlight poverty when they do puff pieces about tourism in Thailand or worse = cambodia (much rather be in cuba citizen than cambodia)....

use your comparative analytic skills and get out of little havana mentality.

    you ask:
when has vencino been to cuba?

i might guess: NEVER or at least not in last 20 years.. these folks don't want to see ANY cuban happy unless the system is exactly how they want.

  7. Vecino, Cuban or not, is the only one on this damn forum who possesses any damn sensibility. The others of you, when will you cease in blaming the Unites States for the wrongdoings and maltreatment of a people by the Cuban regime? When will you cease believing exactly what Fidel desires for you to believe? When will you pack your bags and return to Cuba, you filthy ingrates, you damn malagradecidos, you damn contempopary Americans? How is it that someone could be so easily coerced? This is merely a propaganda video to market the tourist economy. It is like Fidel showing you one hand while slapping you with the other. But you cannot ascertain this simile because you blame the U.S. for these misfortunes. You all remind me so much of Fidel. Good day, mariconas.

to be clear I answer your questions:

    you ask:
".. when will you cease in blaming the Unites States for the wrongdoings and maltreatment of a people by the Cuban regime?"

We are not blaming the USA, just arguing that USA has NO right to impose its version of reality on any regime/country, including Cuba.

    you ask:
"When will you cease believing exactly what Fidel desires for you to believe?"

response: silly goose, that is the point the wingnuts don't understand, many of us are not 'pro-fidel' at all, just we are anti usa imperalism, - if you can't see the difference , please go to college.

    You write:
"when will you pack your bags and return to Cuba, you filthy ingrates, you damn malagradecidos, you damn contempopary Americans?"

my response: wohhooo, you, I see are one of the froth-mouthed, old exiles, who is probably not well educated and hasn't been back to cuba in decades.

    You write:
"This is merely a propaganda video to market the tourist economy."

This is faulty logic. Its simply CNN or any news narrative on tourism in the Caribbean. They are reporting on a trend. When CNN reports on tourism in Miami, do they necessarily report on the 40 percent poverty rate in most areas? Do they report about the relatively 'low wages' the service class of miami obatain, so many work 70 hours per week to survive.

Thankfully, we have Obama, and I, as my new constitution provides, can visit my family whenever I want... and we will be one of those happy Cuban families you see in CNN... eat that HATE, sorry you can't bring yourself to enjoy your own country... keep being an exile, I myself am citizen of both countries! :).

  10. Does one has to travel to Cuba to comment on a news report about Cuba?

  11. Mr. Peters has deleted my comment. Fidel deletes many comments as well. This is very sad.

  12. The Hate,

I would advise you to tone down your cooments. All sides have a right to their opinions. Each side advances their point best by posting comments based on fact and reason rather than invective and vitriol. We may still disagree on the perceptions of the facts and what is reasonable but in the end our own thinking gets improved by a good counterpoint.

Phil Peters is a very gracious and tolerant host who allows all sides to have spirited debates. Many a times I have called both sides on their lack of civility (the gusano label and personal attacks on Lefside have been two of my calls to arms) so take this comment as friendly. You have already done more than many. At least you sign with a handle. Get rid of the insults and your contributions will be appreciated!

  14. I like the comment section regardless of the opinions expressed in it, and it’s open without any kind of registration or moderation. I read the comments, I don’t respond to them as often as I should, but at times I answer a question and I often get ideas for information that I should try to provide. I appreciate the comments and the questions.

In very few cases, I have deleted comments. I’m not going to write a bunch of guidelines but I think that if you avoid obscenity or certain kinds of references to violence, you’re going to be in good shape.

Now regarding this CNN story, I think the news here is that Cubans were prohibited from going to these tourist hotels in their own country; the whole “tourism apartheid” thing. It was announced that the prohibition was ending, and now we’re seeing news coverage of Cubans in these facilities. Obviously not all Cubans can afford it, although some low-season pricing that was covered in an earlier news story surely helped. I’m sure unlimited remittances will help too. Best of all would be more policies that allow more Cubans to earn more money.

  15. vecino, bravo for your comment to The Hate. i don't agree with your side but respect your consistency. The Hate does nothing but perpetuate the cliche of a gusano (sorry) that allows emotion to overcome facts or reality. And when someone implies violence, that crosses the line.

and while you don't have to go to cuba to comment on a news story, not going has the tendency to diminish credibility, particularly when comments are consistently critical.

and to The Hate -- read the note that obama signed off the TWTA again, read the act and try and understand something, anything, instead of just being odious.

pete, you want teh cubans to earn more, end the travel restrictions, end the embargo, end the hostility.

  16. Anonymous September 14, 2009 2:30 PM,

The Hate has an interesting point of view that shows that the stereotyping of the Cuban-American community is simplistic at best. Having said my comments apply to all the posters to this blog including you when you when you throw out the gusano slur.

As far as the embargo and the hostility I would posit that the only way out of it is to understand that all sides have legitimate concerns, and the only way out of this schizophrenic situation is to acknowledge that and start finding common ground. Insulting each other is not the way to go, and that it includes using the gusano slur.

  17. As a counterpoint to CNN's story the following video may show a more dramatic side of daily Cuban life:
