In spite of an underfinanced campaign, former U.S. Interests Section chief Jim Cason was elected mayor of Coral Gables yesterday with 3,056 votes. He credited Granma with driving extra Cuban-American votes in his direction with articles like this one from writer Jean-Guy Allard. Miami New Times, which also profiled Cason, tried to claim credit for the victory in an article sub-headlined, “Banana Republican.” Don’t yet know how the city’s foreign policy will change.
