“The passions and the hatreds have to end”

That’s a quote from retiring Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart in this Herald column by Myriam Marquez. You figure it out.

Meanwhile, here are two views of his decision not to seek re-election and his brother Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart’s decision to switch districts in the 2010 election: from the Herald’s political writer Beth Reinhard, and from Rui Ferreira writing in Spain’s El Mundo.

Please. The whole article is impossible to figure it out. Painting LDB as some sort of tolerant pragmatic figure who didn't make the embargo a partisan issue or doesn't care if the ship goes to the left? Not to mention inaccurate, if Congress codified the embargo "led by Diaz Balart" how come none of the major pieces of legislation to that effect weren't presented or sponsored by him?

Aren't they related to Castro anyway?

"The passions and the hatreds have to end."

Interesting quote for sure.

Also I don't agree that he won the "Battle of Ideas". Isn't that exactly the name Fidel gave to it?

If there's anything the Cuban government has accomplished in the last 20 years, it's winning the international public relations battle of ideas.
