Odds and ends

  • The Cuban team hit six homers and beat South Africa, 8-1 in the first round of the World Baseball Classic. Cuba faces Australia in its next game Tuesday night; story here, remaining schedule here.

  • The BBC’s Havana correspondent writes on his Spanish-language blog about Radio and TV Marti: “I don’t know anyone in Cuba who has seen TV Marti.”

like any average Cuban would admit to a com-symp BBC journalist that they have seen TV Marti....yes, let's just imagine, Pepito on a Havana streetcorner broadcasting to the world, "YES, I watch TV Marti ALL THE TIME! I especially like Program X and Program B! The stuff on State TV is such crap! What is your next question, amigo?" what do you think Peters?

Anon, just relax.

You are right insofar as Cubans would not go about announcing that they can see TV marti from the street corner. However, you are dead wrong in your conflation of the aforementioned statement as a confirmation of your position.

If you have ever been to Cuba or know average real Cubans living on la isla (have you?), you would know from empirical fact that the vast vast majority of regular cubans have never seen TV marti. (or even radio marti)

One side of my whole family is still living in Cuba. When I have visited them, they, and all of their friends, have never even heard of TV marti/ Why would they lie to me? I am just family, not reporter. The BBC person is right, sorry this reality doesn't fit with your presupposed position.

whether TV Marti can be seen or not is a different issue...the idea of a "man on the street" interview in Cuba just proves how absolutely obtuse and ignorant outside observers can be to the Cuban reality.

That's funny because I don't know of anyone in Cuba that listens to the BBC.
