Odds and ends

  • The Cuban government has invited Manfred Nowak, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on torture to visit Cuba, Reuters reports. Nowak says he expects the visit to be arranged this year, EFE reports, and that he will visit “all kinds of jails and prisoners,” “including the political” prisoners, “without advance notice.” He added: “The Cuban government knows perfectly my conditions for visiting a country. I want to meet alone with prisoners and their families.” An English summary of the EFE story is here.

  • AP has a nice story on the Hemingway documents at the JFK Library in Boston, thanks to the persistence of Rep. Jim McGovern.

Dear Phil,
Do you think Obama would even consider returning Guantanamo Bay?

In his heart and intellectually, he knows we should return it, but the know-nothings and fox know nothings would spin this as treason, thus it may be bad politically, in rural american, therefore he won't return my opinion..

the know-nothings crowd destroy everything good in america.

"[T]he know-nothings crowd destroy everything good in america."

Well, how about the "know-nothings" who, 50 years after Castro's seizure of power, still pretend they don't know anything about the establishment of a totalitarian state in a neigboring country? Those are the kind of know-nothings I am especially concerned about.

the know-nothings know perfectly well what is going on in Cuba, they just pretend not to see it for ideological reasons. These leftist know-nothings are like the proverbial monkey:
they see no evil (so long as is leftist or socialist), hear no evil, and they certainly do not speak any evil against them. Ah, but if we were dealing with the likes of Pinochet, Somoza or Batista, then you will see how fast they turn themselves into know it-alls and screm at the top of their lungs about human rights abuses.
